News-
The NMS Technology Student Association has had many field trips and been involved in various community activities this year. This year we plan on trying some different competitions, and it almost time to begin. Congratulations to all of the students that placed in competition last year. Check out the remainder of our website and think about joining the TSA.
Technology in our School-
Technology is a major issue in our school. Norwayne Middle School has many computers that help teachers teach their classes and our computer lab is set-up for kids to learn how to use a computer. Our school has recently opened up the Internet for student use. It has been a valuable teaching device for the teachers, and it is a great resource. Norwayne has just recently gotten a large quantity of new computers. Norwayne Middle will continue to use more modern teaching tools.
Activities-
TSA is spending a lot of
our time helping other people out. We enjoyed helping people and donated
many items to needy people. TSA has also worked on cleaning up our
school. We have repainted one of the walls and we painted the TSA
emblem on the blue background. All of us in the TSA enjoy helping, and
that is what we do best. We also had our Annual TSA Cookout, which was a
blast!
School News-
Our school was very busy this year. We first had a new group of buildings constructed that houses two modern computer labs. The building also has a few eighth grade classrooms. Our seventh grade was also very busy preparing for the writing test. They took the test on March 7, 2000. Our school's TSA was also very busy those last few months before competition. They went to State competition on April 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. For more about our school's TSA chapter go to their web site. Click here to go to the TSA web site!
Norwayne Middle School is located in Wayne County, Fremont, North Carolina. Click here to see a map! We have over 900 students enrolled in the 6th, 7th, and 8th grades during this 2000-2001 school year. NMS was recognized as "A School of Distinction" for the 1998 school year.
E-mail any questions or comments to the TSA advisor at [email protected]!
Competition-
Competition is what TSA is all about. We competed with our region on March the 2nd, and then we went to State finals. A couple of our students went to Nationals in June. They went all the way to Atlanta, Georgia.

An airplane is a heavier-than-air flying transportation vehicle. They are supported by the flow of air under the wings of the plane. There are hundreds of kinds of airplanes in the world. Military models can carry weapons and troops. Commercial models can transport people and their belongings quickly. They can also help fight fires and do many other things. The first successful powered flight occurred in 1903. Orville and Wilbur Wright made the flight near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.
1910’s
The Panama Canal was completed in 1914. It was considered the greatest engineering feat in the modern age. The canal was started in 1904. The Panama Canal is an artificial waterway across the Isthmus of Panama in Central America. The canal connects the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. This passage decreases the trip from the Atlantic to the Pacific by 7,000 miles.

The helicopter was invented in 1935. A helicopter is a type of aircraft that obtains lift with one or more rotors, also called propellers. It was perfected between 1936-1941. Today there are all kinds of helicopters. The military has attack and transport helicopters. Many police forces have helicopters to aid in the capture of criminals. Hospitals even have them to airlift victims to the hospital. Helicopters have many uses, and are very popular.
1940’s
In 1945
an atomic bomb was built, using many of Albert Einstein’s ideas. The bomb
was dropped on July 16, 1945 near Alamogordo, N. Mex. The bomb had a
19-kiloton explosion. In August of 1945 the US dropped two more atomic
bombs on Japan. one on Hiroshima and the other on Nagasaki. The bombs
killed between 120,000 and 140,000 people, almost destroyed both cities, and
helped end World War II. Now nuclear weapons are being destroyed all

An artificial satellite is a
product made to orbit the Earth, or some other body in space. They are used to
study the universe, forecast the weather, transfer telephone calls over the
oceans, assist in navigation, monitor crops and other resources, and observe
movements of military equipment on the ground. The first satellite
launched was Sputnik I, in 1957. Many countries, including the United
States, also launch satellites. There are as many as 2,000 satellites in
orbit with Earth this very minute.
1960’s
The Internet was basically
created in the 1960’s. It was a military database only for military and
government computers. It was called ARPAnet, and it was developed by the
ARPA. The Advanced Research Project Agency of the United States Department
of Defense developed this revolutionary technology. In the early 1990’s
almost all computers had the Internet. There are many ways to get the
Internet. You can use a modem, cable lines, or a satellite receiver.
The Internet is getting sophisticated, as computer technology becomes more
advanced and
powerful.

1970’s
In 1977 Motorola developed a hand-held wireless phone. It was able to communicate with the public telephone network through a system of short range “cells.” In 1985 most car companies were installing these phones directly in their cars. Almost everyone has a cell phone in the USA today. Cellular phones are now completely digital and can surf the Internet.
1980’s
The space shuttle is a reusable rocket launched vehicle designed to go into Earth orbit, transport people and supplies between Earth and other spacecraft, and land safely on Earth. The space shuttle was designed by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). The shuttle was first launched April 12, 1981. The space shuttle consists of three major components; (1) it has a winged orbiter that carries both crew and cargo, (2) an external tank containing liquid hydrogen (fuel) and liquid oxygen (oxidizer) for the shuttle’s three main rocket engines, (3) and a pair of large, solid-propellant, strap-on booster rockets. The space shuttle can launch satellites and probes in its orbiter cargo bay. The space shuttle has made a space travel history.
1990’s
The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a revolutionary worldwide navigation
system that uses radio signals broadcast by satellites. Ships, planes, and
even automobiles can carry a GPS receiver to navigate them. The United
States Armed Forces began developing this system in the 1970’s. The system
became fully operational in 1995.
